Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at north of Luquanzi, Wangqing County, Jilin Province. It was named by Wu Shuibo, Sun Ge and Liu Weizhou in 1980.

Synonym: It was firstly named as Tuopangou Formation by Jilin Geological Bureau, represents the Early Triassic deposits in 1966. And then the middle volcanic rocks in the upper part of the formation were separated from the first member of coal-bearing clastic rocks and named as the Malugou Formation by Wushuibo in 1980. Mi Jiarong integrated the Malugou Formation and the Sanxianling Formation as the Late Triassic deposits in 1993


Lithology and Thickness

It is a set of gray-black pyroclastic rock, clastic rock, sand slate and thin coal layer with intermediate acid volcanic rock. The thickness is 1067 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is conformable in contact to the underlying the Tuopangou Fm

Upper contact

It is disconformable with the overlying rhyolite of the Tianqiaoling Fm

Regional extent

It is well-developed in Tianqiaoling Basin, Erqingbei Basin and Fanxishan Basin, Jilin Province.

Depositional setting
